I've created many altars, shrines and ritual spaces over the years. Each expressed the unique needs and aspirations of who I was at the time of its creation, and each balanced the limits of my living space with the potential for aesthetic and spiritual engagement. For these have all been living spaces — spaces that were alive with their own energies and moods, spaces that shaped my understanding of myself and sculpted me into new forms even as I organized and cleansed and decorated and invariably made a mess of them in an ever-repeating cycle.

House-hunting in Seattle has put me in mind of these many different sacred spaces, and what new altars I will craft as I make a home for myself on the shores of a new ocean. So, while I'm nursing my jet lag and scrambling to pack, I thought this week might be a good opportunity to take a look back at some of those altars of old as I dream of inspiration for new ones yet to come.

I really like the minimalism and elegance of your altars. Many altar pictures online show such cluttered tables, and that is really not my thing.

Have I seen you on pimp my altar before? I seem to remember your boxes!

Gorgeous photos! I'm also a fan of clever travel size altars :)

Love it all.

Yep! I've shared photos on Pimp My Altar before. :) I'm rather proud of my travel altar. It managed to make the trip with me to Northern Ireland and back – and if you leave out the matches, everything else is carry-on safe even with the strict airport regulations these days.

They are all beautiful. I also like the simplicity, and how they can easily be seen as decoration rather than something obviously religious. And I especially like the outdoor altar. I've been wanting to create some sort of altar space outside but wasn't sure what to do, and I found yours inspiring.

Wonderful pictures. Thank you. We are fortunate to have a dedicated ritual room in our house. I thought that would be sufficient, but the altars spilled out over the entire house, table tops, walls, and now even a floor mat. Wonderful marks of sacred space and intention, these altars!
